Reader lived briefly in Blenheim (N.Z.) in the late 1870s or early 1880s (collecting near Blenheim in 1881) before emigrating from N.Z. to Victoria, where he lived, apparently for many years, at Dimboola. He was an enthusiastic botanist who published many papers in the Victorian Naturalist and established himself as an expert on Victorian grasses.
